Thomas Burt was a North Carolina bluesman who was still playing at festivals and bars in Durham when I moved there in 1986 or so. He was in his 90s when I heard him and he could still play all of those intricate Piedmont blues guitar riffs. Thomas Burt was one of Blind Boy Fuller's contemporaries and like Fuller, he played on the streets outside the Durham tobacco factories. The words painted on this piece, "My hooks in the water, my cork is on top...", is a song Burt often played.
